Our Mission: At Ella Mae, we want your skin to enjoy all the benefits of snail slime. Indeed, we seek to promote this truly natural ingredient in our range of cosmetics. After more than 540 million years of evolution, the snail has developed its mucus that is exceptionally compatible with the skin, and we invite you to discover all its benefits here.
THE BENEFITS OF SNAIL SLIME ON THE SKIN
Snail slime is a brilliant secret known to man for thousands of years. In ancient Greece, it was recognised for its benefits. Already then, it was identified as an effective solution for the skin with many marvellous virtues: healing, regenerating, highly moisturising, and exfoliating. Today, these are the main therapeutic and cosmetic powers attributed to this gem of nature.
After conducting our own research, in collaboration with the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and the University of Rouen, we have been able to confirm all these benefits already known 2500 years ago. We now know that it is the presence of proteins in snail slime that are beneficial for the skin. For these reasons, snail slime is the main ingredient of our organic skincare products.
So, what is hidden in the snail slime? Before presenting its qualities to the human skin, the healing benefits of this precious liquid firstly assist the snail, allowing it to heal and regenerate itself. Indeed, the snail filtrate is composed of nutrients that enable it to protect its skin from drying out, protects the snail from infections and harmful ultraviolet rays.
For us, once it has been purified from bacterial flora, it becomes bioavailable to the skin. It acts as a protective barrier, and the mucus effectively diminishes many skin problems. It soothes burns, heals scars, and acts as an anti-wrinkle formula. It also relieves the skin from acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
THE BENEFITS OF SNAIL SLIME: 6 FABULOUS ACTIONS OF SNAIL SLIME PROTEINS
Put under the microscope, the snail's slime reveals its fantastic cosmetic properties. Here we summarize 6 actions capable of regenerating the skin daily and solving a variety of long-term skin problems.
1. THE MOISTURISING AND NOURISHING ACTION OF THE SNAIL SLIME
Approximately 80% of the skin is composed of elastin* and collagen*. These proteins are naturally present in snail slime and determine the skin's softness and suppleness. They enable tissue regeneration and, help smooth out wrinkles and stretch marks, especially as the skin ages and struggles to replenish itself. In other words, the proteins in snail slime help to give the skin a new look.
2. THE REGENERATING ACTION OF THE SNAIL SLIME
Haemocyanin*, the most abundant protein in snail slime, and serine proteases*, act on the ageing process by activating the skin's respiration and cell renewal. Helicase RNA* is an enzyme specialising in crucial cellular processes such as DNA repair. The telomere-associated protein RIF1* is used for cell stability, and is involved in the process of slowing down cellular ageing and the protection of damaged DNA.
3. THE HEALING ACTION OF THE SNAIL SLIME
Actin*, the second most common protein in snail mucus, and allantoin*, take care of the wound healing process in the skin and promote tissue repair. Also, myosin*, are PDI* protein, are combined with actin*, to help load the peptides responsible for assisting the immune response. All these proteins present in mucus help to promote deep dermal healing and tissue repair.
4. THE PURIFYING ACTION OF THE SNAIL SLIME
Antimicrobial* Peptides, Actin*, and Cytokeratins* present in snails slime all help support the immune system and limit the growth of bacteria on the skin. We have also demonstrated a bacteriostatic effect on S. epidermidis which is linked to certain skin infections such as acne. More than 80% of teenagers suffer from it (juvenile acne). However, it is also increasingly common for acne to persist in adults, especially in women (hormonal acne).
5. THE ANTIOXIDANT ACTION
Oxygenated compounds such as Vitamin D (Vitamin D3*, D4*, Ergosterol*) and serine proteases* play a major role in skin renewal, and assist in neutralising the action of free radicals. They are created by a fragment obtained when splitting a molecule. This creates a single, unpaired electron which gives it great chemical responsiveness. This unstable molecule becomes highly reactive with the surrounding molecules.
6. THE EXFOLIATING ACTION OF THE SNAIL SLIME
Glycolic acid* restores radiance to the complexion by effectively eliminating dead skin and helping to reduce skin blemishes. Type II cytockeratins are keratins present in the epithelial tissues. They have the particularity of being basic or neutral (pH ≥ 7) and combine with type I cytokeratins to form intermediate filaments. They play a role in establishing the epidermal barrier on the skin.
